Fitness Specialist

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Provides and maintains an enjoyable, non-competitive, and safe environment that embraces healthy changes for program participants.
- Explain and enforce safety rules and regulations governing Wellness Center compliance including: the use of exercise equipment, cleanliness, purchase orders, inventory of supplies, participant files, computer, and other electronic equipment in the Wellness Center.
- Provides group classes and one-on-one instruction using a variety of fitness and exercise techniques.
- Conducts fitness assessments on participants using the American College of Sports Medicine guidelines.
- Evaluates individuals’ abilities, needs, and physical conditions, and develops suitable training programs to meet any special requirements.
- Works closely with the Health Promotion Team, medical providers, and partners to provide patients with comprehensive care to help individuals and groups with their fitness goals.
- Undertakes motivational training and counseling techniques designed to encourage participation and performance.
- Tracks program participant progress (A1C, lipid panel, weight loss, exercise goals) and other indicators to evaluate program success.
- Ensures proper NextGen EHR documentation, confirm charts are securely filed and in a timely manner.
- Instruct participants in maintaining exertion levels in order to maximize benefits from exercise routines.
- Teach and demonstrate use of various therapeutic modalities and training equipment such as weights, when appropriate.
- Maintains fitness equipment daily.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENT
Bachelor’s Degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, or Exercise Physiology. Two (2) plus years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties. ACSM Certified Exercise Physiologist or equivalent. This position is covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Due to this requirement, the agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes. Must be current with required immunization per the NACA HR Policies and Procedures and Infection Control Policy. BLS and HIPAA Certification. Must pass Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance & background check investigation in accordance with NACA HR Policy.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Knowledge of physical fitness, exercise, nutrition and instruction, and motivational approaches to wellbeing and good health as recommended by the American College of Sports Medicine.
- Knowledge of chronic disease a plus.
- Knowledge of physical fitness assessment for healthy participants and those with health issues.
- A willingness to undergo training and to maintain current certification is essential.
- Skills in communications, interpersonal skills applied to interaction with members of the public, chronic disease patients, coworkers and/or supervisors, sufficient to exchange or convey information.
