Health Information System Specialist
Salary: $90,000 – $100,000 annually

ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Ensure compliance with healthcare regulations related to health information management.
- Maintain policies and procedures that govern how protected information is handled, stored, and shared within the organization.
- Manage day‑to‑day operations of the EHR, including configuration, updates, and issue resolution.
- Configure and customize EHR templates, forms, and application components to support clinical workflows, national coding updates, and operational needs.
- Monitor system performance, logs, backups, and messaging functions (e.g., CCDA, HIE transactions) to ensure reliable functionality.
- Perform routine system integrity checks on a daily, weekly, and quarterly schedule, including database health, messaging workflows, backups, and physical server/equipment security.
- Coordinate with IHS/OIT, vendors, and external partners on application testing, system upgrades, updates, maintenance and technical needs assessments.
- Ensure compliance with the HIPAA Security Rule
- Support Zero Trust security, vendor risk review, and ransomware‑readiness protocols including timely incident reporting within 72 hours for qualifying cybersecurity events.
- Implement and maintain compliance with IHS administrative instructions and current federal requirements under 42 CFR Part 136.
- Align EHR workflows with AAAHC standards for privacy, governance, and quality improvement. Support continuous compliance during AAAHC’s 1095‑day accreditation cycle.
- Provide onboarding and annual competency training for EHR users.
- Supply accurate EHR‑based metrics and data for GPRA, UDS, MU, and internal quality programs.
- Ensure timely offboarding, including closure of orders, notes, and outstanding notifications.
- Supervise HIS staff, including training, assigning, reviewing, and evaluating work performance.
- Participates in the Quality Improvement Program through incident reporting and identifying opportunities for improvement.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENT
Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science, Information Systems Management, MIS, or Health Informatics, or related field; Four (4) years of work experience supporting EHR systems (NextGen preferred); or any combination of experience and education to sufficiently perform required duties. NextGen-related certification (preferred). This position is covered by Public Law 101-630, requiring contact or control over Indian children. Due to this requirement, the agency must ensure that persons hired for these positions have not been found guilty of or pleaded nolo contendere or guilty to certain crimes. Must be current with required immunization per the NACA HR Policies and Procedures and Infection Control Policy. Level I Fingerprint Clearance, BLS, and HIPAA Certification. Possess a valid Driver’s License. Must pass a criminal background investigation.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Proficiency in EHR administration, database configurations, and system testing.

- Knowledge of AAAHC privacy and governance expectations and HIPAA security rule.

- Ability to train, support, and collaborate effectively across departments.
- Ability to interpret and apply evolving federal, IHS, and accreditation standards.
